Pop music has the power to transform lives, and that’s a key element in M. Night Shyamalan’s almost-thriller “Trap.” This film feels less like the signature Shyamalan experience and more like a simplified version of his usual style, lacking the depth and visual flair that could have brought its best concepts to life. Shyamalan shines brightest when collaborating with skilled artisans, as seen in films like “The Sixth Sense,” “Old” (which has grown on me), and “The Village.” Unfortunately, “Trap” often misses the mark in terms of the craftsmanship needed to create genuine energy and suspense. Nevertheless, Josh Hartnett nearly redeems the film with his engaging portrayal, infusing his character with a charm that is hard to resist. It’s unfortunate that his impressive performance sometimes feels confined within a film that struggles to utilize it effectively.
Most of “Trap” takes place in a setting that can be quite daunting for a parent shelling out big bucks for the latest pop sensation. In this instance, it’s Lady Raven, portrayed by Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka, who embodies a star reminiscent of Taylor Swift. The audience is predominantly made up of teenagers, all singing along to every lyric. Saleka is responsible for writing and performing much of the music, but to be frank, there’s a bit too much of it, especially since it doesn’t quite match the catchiness of Swift’s hits.

The story follows an ordinary man named Cooper (Hartnett) and his teenage daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) as they attend a Lady Raven concert in Philadelphia. Shortly after they arrive, with little character development, Cooper becomes aware of a significant police presence at the venue, including heavily armed officers stationed at every entrance. Through a brief act of kindness, he gains the trust of a vendor (Jonathan Langdon), who reveals a shocking secret: the police and federal agents are there because a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher is in the building. And Cooper is that man.
Their plan is to stop every man who attempts to leave the venue.
